Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (RTMS) is a non-invasive and relatively painless treatment tool now used extensively in treatment of brain–behavior disorders or commonly classified as neuropsychiatric disorders. RTMS acts by specifically modulate distinct brain areas such DLPFC, OFC, Motor area, SMAs etc. Studies have shown that repeated stimulation at low frequency produces long-lasting inhibition , which is called as long-term depression, whereas repeated high-frequency stimulation can produce excitation of brain areas and helps in treatment of various Disorders such as Depression etc. It has been used to study the cortical and subcortical functions, neural plasticity and brain mapping in normal individuals and in various neuropsychiatric disorders.

 

RTMS is one of the treatment for resistant depression, OCD Hallucinations, Chronic tinnitus, etc. It has very minimal to no adverse effect profile compared with electroconvulsive therapy. In other neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, mania, epilepsy and substance abuse, it has been found to be useful in reducing the symptoms. RTMS has been approved for treatment of Depression and OCD by American FDA. Recently FDA has approved SAINT protocol ( Stanford accelerated intelligence neuromodulation therapy) its a TMS treatment used to treat Depression in just 5 days. Now we can treat Depression in 5 days with this protocol.
